四国高知のハンコ屋小谷印判店でございます。
これはハンコ屋の仕事とウッドワークの両方かな？桜の枝にハンコを彫りました。
そこらへんで折り取ってきた枝を切って、ちょっと彫って簡単楽々で良いね。なんて安易に考えたアナタ。それは大きな勘違い。
実は長い年月と手間がかかっているんです。
晩秋、涼しくなって空気が乾燥してるころ山に入り、肌が綺麗で、まっすぐで、握りやすい適度な大きさの枝を刈り取ります。小口に割れが来ないよう日陰で乾燥させること数年。乾燥後に皮にしわが寄らず、形が綺麗で中の芯が詰んでいる部分だけを６～7㎝程に切り分けます。
一抱えの桜の枝でもそんな工程を経てハンコの材料になるのは僅かな量なのです。
（ちなみに残った部分は小片にして燻製作りに使います。）
今回彫る文字は『福笑ひ』
お客様とあれこれ紙に書いて検討して７割位決めたら、あとはこちらに任せていただいて作字。
何度か印稿（イメージ画）を描きそれを材料に鉛筆で薄く下書きをして、上から筆でなぞります。
と、サラッと書きましたが、ここまでで仕上がりがほとんど決まってしまう、実は一番重要な作業です。
It’s easy to cut a branch from the ground and carve it into a little piece. You may have thought that it would be easy. You are mistaken.
In fact, it takes a long time and a lot of work.
In late autumn, when the weather is cooler and the air is drier, we go into the mountains and cut branches that are clean-skinned, straight, and of the right size for easy gripping. The branches are dried in the shade for several years to prevent cracking at the small end. After drying, we cut only the parts with no wrinkles on the skin, with a nice shape, and with a tight core inside into 6 to 7 cm pieces.
Only a small amount of cherry branches can be used to make stamps through this process.
(By the way, the remaining part is used to make smoke .)
The character to be engraved this time is “FUKUWARAI”
After the customer and I decided about 70% of the characters on paper, the rest was left to me to create the characters.
I drew a draft several times, made a thin draft with a pencil on the material, and traced it with a brush on top.
This is the most important part of the process, as the finished product is almost completely determined at this point.
あとは墨線を残しながら周りを荒彫します。文字を切ったら一からやり直し、だから傷つけないよう慎重に。
すべて彫ったら次は仕上げ。切り出し刀で字の形を整えます。
福笑いのおカメさんのように、ちょっと曲がったり飛び跳ねた感じが良いのかなと思って作りました。
桜皮も綺麗だなあ。時々椿油でも塗ってくれれば、美しさを長く保てます。
保存するのも少しだけ手間がかかるので、ハンコに思い入れを持ってくれた方にしか提案しない特殊な印材。選んでくれてありがとう。７年間熟成したハンコが今日旅立ちました。
